If you hire at volume and want assessments that mirror the actual job, with results you can explain to a candidate or a legal team, Vervoe is the platform we'd put first. That's our view, and we're biased, so use the rest of this page to test it. Other needs point elsewhere: SHL for deep psychometric and personality testing, TestGorilla or Canditech if you want to start testing candidates today without a sales process, and HireVue if you want assessment bundled with AI interviewing.

We built Vervoe, so we're not a neutral party. Everything we say about the other five comes from their own public pages as of October 2026, not from hands-on trials. Where we cite an independent audit of Vervoe, we name the auditor. If you want to see how we think about role-based skills assessments in more depth, that page is a good companion to this one.

Key takeaways

  • Explainability matters more than the feature list. Plenty of platforms can test a candidate. The useful question is whether a platform can tell a rejected candidate, in specific terms, why they didn't pass.
  • Role-based and trait-based testing are different tools. Vervoe, HireVue and Canditech build around real job tasks. SHL and parts of Criteria lean toward psychometric and personality science. Neither is right for every job. The role decides.
  • Self-serve and enterprise feel very different to buy. TestGorilla and Canditech both let you start without talking to sales. Vervoe, HireVue, SHL and Criteria work through a sales conversation and custom pricing.
  • Ask about AI integrity by name. Tab-switch detection is a common feature. Identity verification, continuous proctoring and AI-content detection are worth asking each vendor about directly.
  • We listed ourselves first, and we're saying so. We left out numeric scores because no vendor should grade its own homework.

What is a skills assessment platform?

A skills assessment platform gives candidates real job tasks to complete, scores what they produce, and hands the hiring team a result they can act on. It's different from an applicant tracking system, which manages workflow, and from a sourcing tool, which finds candidates. All six platforms here work at the assessment step, though several also cover screening, interviewing or sourcing.

What separates them most is what the candidate is asked to do: something close to the actual job, or something that correlates with it. Role-based simulations, cognitive tests, personality inventories, coding challenges and structured video interviews each answer that differently.

How we built this list

We're a skills assessment vendor writing about our own category, so read this as an interested party's view, not an independent audit.

What we did: We reviewed each vendor's public positioning, product pages and pricing pages as of October 2026. We looked at four things that matter for enterprise, high-volume hiring: whether assessments are built on real job tasks or a generic test bank, whether results can be explained back to a specific skill, how the platform deals with AI-assisted test-taking, and whether it's built for enterprise scale and governance.

What we didn't do: We didn't trial every platform, and we didn't give anyone a numeric score. A number out of 100 would suggest a precision we can't support from outside a competitor's product. We'd rather tell you what each platform is for and let you verify it.

The shortlist

  1. Vervoe: Role-based, explainable skills assessments built on real job tasks, at volume
  2. HireVue: Assessment bundled with AI-driven video interviewing across the full funnel
  3. SHL: Deep psychometric science (cognitive, personality, behavioral) with managed services
  4. Criteria: A broad test library plus post-hire development tools from one vendor
  5. TestGorilla: A self-serve skills test library without a sales cycle
  6. Canditech: Realistic tool simulations, including candidates working alongside AI assistants

The detailed reviews

1. Vervoe

Best for: large employers hiring repeatable roles at volume that need every assessment result to be explainable.

Vervoe is a skills assessment platform that helps enterprises make people decisions on evidence rather than resumes. Its assessments are built on real job tasks, and every result is explainable, so candidates, hiring managers and legal teams can all see why someone scored the way they did. Vervoe's assessments have been validated using data from millions of candidates, and the platform goes through an annual bias audit by Holistic AI, an independent auditor.

It works in four steps. A recruiter pastes in a job description and the AI Assessment Builder drafts a role-specific assessment in minutes. Candidates or employees complete real job tasks, from spreadsheet and email simulations to code challenges and video responses. Vervoe's own machine learning models, tuned to the customer's grading history rather than a generic answer key, score every response. About 120 days after a hire, Vervoe checks real job performance against the original assessment and feeds what predicts success back into the skills taxonomy.

What stands out: Every question maps to a named skill, and every score traces back to the training data behind it. If a candidate is rejected, an administrator can open any question, see what the model was taught to reward, correct it if something looks off, and rescore every candidate against the corrected standard. That gives you a real answer to "why didn't I get the job," which a score with no explanation behind it can't.

Key features

Strengths

  • Every score traces back to the specific task and skill behind it
  • Assessments can be drafted from the actual job description rather than picked from a generic test bank
  • An independent annual bias audit, and a way to rescore everyone when a grading error is fixed

Worth checking before you buy

  • Vervoe sells directly to enterprise organizations, typically those with 1,000 or more employees hiring at volume. There's no self-serve, credit card checkout.
  • If you want to start testing candidates today without a sales conversation, that's a real trade-off compared with TestGorilla's or Canditech's self-serve plans.

Pricing: custom, volume-based quote. No published self-serve rate card.

Customers: Lumen Technologies, Australia Post, Rentokil, Kroll, dentsu, and Tennis Australia, among others.

2. HireVue

Best for: large employers that want assessment, AI-driven video interviewing and candidate engagement in a single platform.

HireVue positions itself as a leader in hiring science. It has four connected products: Engage for matching and applying, Screen for AI interviewer conversations, Assess for skills tests and an assessment builder, and Interview for video interviewing with live note-taking. On its science page it cites 20+ years of I-O psychology experience and 1,300+ validation studies.

Strengths

  • One vendor covers matching, screening, assessment and interviewing end to end
  • Aimed at high-volume, early-career and campus recruiting
  • A large internal validation research function, by its own account

Worth checking before you buy

  • Ask how an individual score explains back to a job task. A broad platform and an explainable one aren't always the same thing.

Pricing: custom, quote-based.

3. SHL

Best for: organizations that want deep psychometric science, including cognitive, personality and behavioral testing, often delivered through managed services.

SHL describes its offering as "Trusted Talent Intelligence for Confident People Decisions." It says 45 million SHL assessments are taken every year and cites over 45 billion data points on workforce skills, performance and potential. It also offers managed services and outsourced assessment centers alongside its software.

Strengths

  • A deep set of psychometric tests covering cognitive ability, personality and behavior
  • A large assessment data set, by its own figures
  • Managed services and outsourced assessment centers for teams that want delivery handled for them

Worth checking before you buy

  • Trait-based testing is a different approach from role-based, work-sample testing. If you need the latter, this is the gap to check first.

Pricing: custom, quote-based.

4. Criteria

Best for: mid-market and enterprise teams that want a wide pre-employment test library plus post-hire development tools from one vendor.

Criteria calls itself the talent signal platform and is built around three products: Assess (cognitive, personality, emotional intelligence, risk, skills and game-based testing), Interview (video interviewing with AI scoring) and Develop (manager check-ins and coaching after the hire). It says it is trusted by 4,000 customers and states that it holds ISO 42001 certification for its AI management system.

Strengths

  • Range: pre-hire testing, interviewing and early post-hire development from one vendor
  • States ISO 42001 certification for its AI management system
  • A wide customer base, at 4,000 customers by its own count

Worth checking before you buy

  • If you need results to trace back to one specific job's real tasks, compare its library-based tests directly against a role-based build process.

Pricing: custom, quote-based.

5. TestGorilla

Best for: smaller or fast-moving teams that want to start testing candidates today, without a sales cycle.

TestGorilla calls itself "the proof-first AI recruiting platform." It is built around Gorilla Sourcing, for searching a large candidate database, and Gorilla Assessments, which has a skills test library, simulations and AI interviews. Both are self-serve and both have a free plan.

Strengths

  • No procurement process between a recruiter and a live assessment
  • A ready-made test library covering a range of roles
  • Published pricing

Worth checking before you buy

  • A pre-built test library is a different starting point from an assessment built around your own job description. That difference matters more for complex, high-stakes or legally sensitive roles.

Pricing: published and self-serve. On annual billing, Gorilla Sourcing starts at $74 per seat per month, and Gorilla Assessments starts from $215 per month per account. Both have a free plan.

6. Canditech

Best for: technical and AI-forward hiring teams that want candidates working inside realistic tool environments, including with AI assistants.

Canditech calls itself "the skill assessment platform for the AI-age." Its assessments run inside simulated versions of real tools, and it lets candidates use AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT and Codex directly in the assessment, treating AI fluency as something to measure rather than block. It offers more than 500 pre-built tests, and it flags activity such as copy-pasting, tab switching and full-screen exits.

Strengths

  • Builds AI-assisted work into the task itself, which suits roles where that matches the real job
  • A library of 500+ pre-built tests, including job simulations in realistic tool environments
  • Four plans (Individual, Team, Pro and Enterprise), with a free start

Worth checking before you buy

  • Prices weren't published on the pages we checked, so confirm costs directly before comparing.
  • Letting candidates use AI assistants only fits roles where that's realistic for the actual job. For other roles, check that your legal and compliance teams are comfortable with how it's framed.

Pricing: tiered (Individual, Team, Pro, Enterprise). Exact figures weren't published on the pages we checked.

Assessment integrity in the AI era

AI changes what an assessment result means. If a candidate can hand the task to a chatbot, what did you actually measure? Gartner, as reported by HR Dive, estimates that 1 in 4 candidate profiles worldwide could be fake by 2028, and the same article notes that 4 in 10 candidates said they also use AI during the application process.

So before you buy, find out whether a vendor's integrity checks stop at the browser or extend to who is actually at the keyboard. Tab-switch detection and copy-paste restrictions are common. Identity verification against a government ID, continuous proctoring through the whole assessment, and plagiarism or AI-content detection are a narrower set, so ask each vendor which ones they offer today. For more on this, see why job simulations resist cheating by design and our guide to candidate fraud detection.

How to choose

  • Start with the job. If the role has clear, observable tasks, like writing an email, triaging a ticket, reviewing a spreadsheet or writing code, a role-based, work-sample platform like Vervoe is built for that. If you're assessing underlying traits like personality fit, a psychometric specialist like SHL is the better starting point.
  • Be honest about timing. If procurement time is your biggest obstacle, TestGorilla's or Canditech's self-serve plans will get you live faster than an enterprise sales process. If you're hiring at real volume with legal exposure to manage, the consultative approach that Vervoe, HireVue, SHL and Criteria all take is worth the longer runway.
  • Ask how a rejected candidate's score is explained. Your legal and compliance team is likely to ask this early. Get a clear answer on whether a score traces back to a specific skill and a reviewable training set, or whether it's one number with nothing behind it.
  • Ask what happens after the hire. Criteria builds post-hire development into its platform. Vervoe extends the same skills evidence into post-hire uses like readiness mapping and succession planning. If the workforce side matters as much as hiring, ask every vendor what happens to the data after day one.
  • Test the integrity story with a real scenario. Ask each vendor what happens, step by step, if a candidate opens a second AI chatbot tab during the assessment, then compare the answers.
