Nurse Manager

The role of a nurse manager is to oversee, supervise and monitor all other nursing staff in the workplace facility. They are in constant communication with both nurses and upper management, and are responsible for implementing any changes and helping the nursing staff to adapt and embrace these changes in procedures or protocols. They work to help and assist nursing staff, create schedules, manage budgets, overview employee performance and give feedback, as well as being heavily involved with patient care.

A nurse manager must ensure a safe environment not only for patients, but also for their employees so that everybody can do their job as efficiently and effectively as possible. They are involved in employing and training new staff, as well as conducting staff meetings to inform new and existing employees about any news or updates.

Day-to-day tasks of this role:

  • Hire and train new staff.

In order to be a nurse manager, a candidate must have the tertiary qualification of a Bachelor of nursing, usually along with a minor qualification in healthcare management or business. Experience working as a nurse and in a leadership position, and industry training is also favourable when applying for this role. There are some common skills required for this position.

It is important that a nurse manager has excellent leadership skills. They must develop and lead their team to ensure they are continuously learning, as well as ensure they are fostering a learning environment. They must create a positive working environment for all staff, and enable staff to provide feedback and improve themselves and their skills for procedures.

It is also essential that a nurse manager has exceptional communication skills. They must be able to communicate effectively and concisely with patients and their families, as well as nurses and other medical professionals. They must ensure that their patients and their patients’ families understand medical jargon, and that they maintain strong communication skills even in high pressure and emotional situations.

It is required that a nurse manager also has extensive clinical knowledge. They must have experience working as a professional nurse as well as in leadership roles. They must maintain knowledge on changes in the industry regarding medications and interventions, and demonstrate competency in patient care and medication administration at all times.
