A truck driver will need to obtain an unrestricted and heavy vehicle licence to be able to operate a truck. There are different types of heavy vehicle licences depending on the type of truck the candidate will be required to operate. Some organizations may also require employees to have completed a Certificate III in Driving Operations through a tertiary institution. There are some common skills required for this position.

It is essential that a truck driver has excellent safety and mechanical knowledge and skills. They must have a strong understanding of the mechanics of a truck and comply with all truck regulation rules. They must also perform safety checks before each day, and prioritise safety in all of their duties including unloading cargo, packing cargo, and driving.

A truck driver must also be extremely adaptable. They must be able to react quickly to changing conditions in the roads and weather conditions, and remain calm under stress on and off the road. They must also be able to think quickly on their feet and overcome any challenges that may occur.

It is also important that a truck driver has strong attention to detail skills. They must pay careful attention to detail when on and off the road, and stay highly focused when driving and be constantly on the lookout for hazards. They must also demonstrate attention to detail when loading the truck, with packages and orders, as well as with addresses.
